Dopesick (streaming on HULU)
We streamed the whole series over the week. At first, this fact based limited series based on a best selling book by Beth Macy didn’t grab me, but after a few episodes I was hooked. The story of the evil Sackler family, purveyors of Oxycontin, progenitors of Perdue (big) Pharma, is one of infamy and heartache. So many families were, and still are, affected by the Opioid crisis in the US and indeed the world. Many place the blame squarely on the shoulders of the company’s President Richard Sackler who pushed sales reps to hard sell the product. Michael Keaton is masterful in the role of Dr Sam Finnix, a victim of his own devices and Kaitlyn Dever is more than believable as Betsy Mallum, a young miner from West Virginia who, after a mining accident, is advised to consume, but is also consumed by Perdue’s product. Other standout performances come from Mare Winningham as Betsy’s mom, Will Poulter as a Perdue sales puppet and Michael Stuhlbarg as the susurratin…
